Releasing a Pet

Releasing your pet to Home At Last can be a difficult decision to make.  We understand and appreciate your efforts to place your companion where he or she will be safe and humanely cared for.

While we cannot guarantee that your pet will be adopted, we do make animals available for adoption as long as they are healthy, well adjusted and not exhibiting significant behavioral or temperamental problems.  We try our best to place animals in homes where they will be considered part of the family and a companion for life.  We will do what we feel is in the best interest of the animal, using our experience and available resources.

Call us at 541-296-5189 to speak with our adoption counselor about being placed on a waiting list.  Being placed on our waiting list does not guarantee your dog or cat a place in our shelter if he/she does not meet our adoption criteria.  Depending on the time of year, our wait list can be days, weeks or even months.

It is helpful if cats are:

  • Well brushed (especially long hair), free of parasites and trimmed nails
  • Spayed or Neutered
  • Current on all vaccinations - with veterinary record
  • Tested for feline leukemia and have veterinary record
  • Social and easily handled
  • At least eight weeks old

It is helpful if dogs are:

  • Bathed, free of parasites and trimmed nails
  • Spayed or Neutered
  • Current on all vaccinations - with veterinary record
  • Socialized with humans and other animals; friendly and controlled

When you are given an appointment to bring your animal to the shelter, plan on spending at least 20 minutes to fill out release papers and a pet personality profile.  This gives us valuable information about your pet that provides us and potential adopters with a realistic description of your pet's strengths, weaknesses and areas for growth.  During your intake appointment your pet will be assessed as to his/her adoptability.  If in our opinion your pet is not a candidate for adoption we will not bring your pet into the shelter.  This decision is based on the safety of our staff and what is best for the animal.

Residents of Wasco County should expect to pay a $25.00 release fee per animal.

Residents outside of Wasco County should expect to pay a $50.00 release fee per animal.  (That fee is reduced to $25.00 if the animal is spayed/neutered.)

If the animal needing to be re-homed was originally adopted from Home At Last, let us know immediately.  We always take our pets back with fees waived.
